How to start MMA & combat sports in Leeds

You don't need to be fit, flexible, young or experienced. This is the only checklist you need to walk into your first class.

Last updated:

1

Pick the style that fits you

Combat sports cover striking (boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai), grappling (BJJ, wrestling, no-gi) and full MMA. If you're unsure, try a kickboxing or BJJ fundamentals class first — both are beginner-friendly.

2

Find a gym within 20 minutes of you

Convenience beats prestige for your first six months. Use our gym directory to filter by area and beginner-friendly classes.

3

Book a free trial

Most gyms run a free trial week or a £5–£10 drop-in. Always confirm directly with the gym before turning up.

4

Wear comfortable kit

T-shirt, shorts or leggings, no jewellery. Bring water, a mouthguard if you have one, and flip-flops for grappling rooms.

5

Show up twice a week for a month

Consistency beats intensity. Two sessions a week for four weeks is enough to know if you want to commit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be fit to start?
No. Beginners' classes are designed for total beginners — your fitness will build inside the training.
How much does it cost?
£55–£110/month for unlimited classes in most Leeds gyms; community boxing clubs are often cheaper. Confirm with the gym.
What if I've never been hit?
You won't be in your first class. Fundamentals classes are drill- and technique-based with no contact sparring.
Is there an age limit?
Most adult classes start at 16. Junior classes run from age 4 upwards depending on the gym.
